Three good questions to ask the people you love in your life when going through tough or easy times:
1. What can I stop doing?
2. What can I start doing?
3. What can I continue doing?
Stopping unwanted behavior, starting desired behavior and continuing appreciated behavior.
It's hard to ask for feedback. It makes one vulnerable. It puts your emotions out there usually with a fear of them not being treated with consideration and compassion.
Although it's hard to ask for feedback, what can information can come from it and then that knowledge to make change can be amazing.
A couple of months back, Jordan and I were discussing the article 'What Happily Married Couples Do' (this is from a magazine that my church publishes each month). After reading each tip we both would assign our marriage a 1, 2 or 3. 1 meaning we do great at it, 2 meaning there is room for improvement and 3 meaning we do not do it all. It was an insightful conversation.
Although things are going great in our marriage, it was still good to talk about how to make things even better. There is always room for improvement. Maybe a little or maybe a lot but it's worth the work to have a better relationship.
Here are the 10 things happily married couples do:
1. Have positive conversations
2. Show affection
3. Remember you are each other's therapists
4. Be humble and cultivate Christ-like attributes
5. Date frequently
6. Enrich your intimacy
7. Spend time with children and/or grandchildren
8. Seek feedback and help each other
9. Eliminate anger
10. Be sensitive to each other's stress levels
